CPAP Supplies Your Insurance Provider May Cover

by Amanda Johnson on June 13, 2010

Many Americans suffer from sleep apnea, a condition for which only an estimated 5% of people receive treatment. There are numerous therapies that can help, the most popular and effective being the use of a CPAP machine. Some people view the cost of treatment as a barrier to getting help. However, most CPAP supplies are probably covered by your insurance provider.

For example, prior to purchasing a machine, the rental of a CPAP unit for 13 months is required by Medicare. Rental costs could run into hundreds of dollars a month. To offset this cost, Medicare will reimburse the patient up to 80%.

There are many supplies that come with the machine that will need to be maintained and replaced as well. These include the headgear, tubing, filters, mask, cushion, and chin strap. You will also need to ask your insurance company if they will cover these items as well.

Masks and headgear tend to last half a year depending on factors such as types of materials, frequency of use, frequency of cleaning, ways the unit is cleaned, and the amount of perspiration and skin oils secreted. There is a set schedule that insurance carriers follow for the replacement of CPAP supplies. Check with your provider for specifics

You can find many available suppliers either online or in your local area. Many will submit the proper paperwork to your provider. If your primary insurance does not cover all of the costs, some suppliers will even bill your secondary insurance as well. If the supplier does not bill your insurance company, they will typically provide all of the necessary information for you to fill out the forms yourself.

If not analyzed correctly, sleep apnea can prove to be a very dangerous disease. In order to determine the CPAP supplies your insurance provider may cover, it is vital to research your policy and the coverage it provides. You must establish what supplies insurance will cover and the paperwork needed for claim processing. When shopping for a supplier in your local area or on the web, it is a good rule of thumb to find out what paperwork they will fill out for you. You will hopefully be sleeping soundly soon.
